Ways to Give

Every Gift Counts

There are many ways to make an impact at the University of Chicago.
From gifts of cash to matching gifts to planned gifts, and more, gifts of all sizes make a difference in our mission to advance research, education, and patient care. Read below for more details, and if you would like to learn more, please contact a gift officer.

To make a gift of cash to University of Chicago Medicine, you may use any of the following methods.

  • Online, via our secure site.
  • By phone, using a credit card, please call 1.888.UCHICAGO (1.888.824.4224).
  • Mail a check payable to The University of Chicago and send to:

    The University of Chicago
    Gift Administration & Business Data
5235 South Harper Court, Suite 450
    Chicago, IL 60615

Cash gifts are deductible for federal income tax purposes up to a limit of 50 percent of your adjusted gross income if you itemize deductions. To the extent your cash gifts in a single year exceed this limit, you may carry over the excess for up to five additional years.

Cash gifts may be pledged for payment over a period of years. To be officially recorded, pledges should be made either in writing or by means of a pledge card.

Thousands of companies and corporate foundations match the gifts of their employees to nonprofit institutions such as the University of Chicago Medicine. Gifts of securities, in addition to gifts of cash, are also often eligible for matching. Matching gift benefits can double, sometimes triple, the value of your gift, while supporting the same program(s) that you support, and are credited to you. Retirees, employee spouses, board members, and officers are included in some programs, so inquire about eligibility.

If your company has a matching gift program, request a matching gift form from your employer and send it completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest.

You may make your contribution online. However, you will need to mail your matching gift form to:

The University of Chicago
Gift Administration & Business Data
5235 South Harper Court, Suite 450
Chicago, IL 60615

Fax: 773.702.9675

Bequests: The most common way to give to the University is through a bequest, which is a gift from your will or living trust. A bequest can be made with cash, securities, real estate, or other assets and be in the form of a dollar amount, specific asset, percentage of your estate, or residual balance. You can decide how your gift benefits the University. Learn more >>

Gifts of real estate: A gift of real estate can be a convenient way to leverage an illiquid asset, reduce the size and complexity of your estate, and enjoy a charitable deduction based on the current fair market value of your property. Learn more >>

Charitable lead trusts: A charitable lead trust works by first using the assets contributed to the trust to make annual payments to the University for a term of years (usually 10 to 20). At the end of the term, the assets remaining in the trust pass to the non-charitable beneficiaries, without passing through the donor’s estate. A charitable lead trust allows a donor to make a significant gift to the University, minimize his or her taxable estate, and pass assets on to non-charitable beneficiaries, such as children. Life income gifts: With life income gifts, the University invests the proceeds of your donated assets—whether in the form of cash, securities, or other appreciated property—and pays you, or designated beneficiaries, an income for life or for a specified term of years. Income-producing planned gifts can enhance your estate by enabling you to increase your income, diversify your holdings, reduce your taxes, and avoid the cost of probate. Learn more >>
