The University of Chicago Medical Center Board of Trustees drives philanthropy to support innovation in research, education, and patient care. At the same time, trustees are charged with other responsibilities, including ensuring the quality of patient care at UChicago Medicine. Joe Greskoviak, former CEO and current vice chairman of Press Ganey, describes how more than 35 years of experience in healthcare informs his work on the board.

What inspired you to join the UCMC Board of Trustees?

I have always had great appreciation for the health systems and professionals who care for people every day. As someone who was born and raised in Chicago, I am committed to helping all Chicagoans lead healthy lives and receive the highest quality of care. UChicago Medicine shares my commitment and plays a vital role in caring for people who live on the south side of the city.

Also, I’ve known Tom Jackiewicz for many years and believe he is one of the best health system executives in the country. It is exciting to support Tom and his team as they continue to raise the bar and evolve the health system.

How does your experience in healthcare inform your work as a trustee?

I’ve worked with some of the largest and most prestigious health systems in the country and while many of them have lofty goals to improve care and evolve their systems, most are slow to change. I believe focus and a drive to act are huge assets for a health system. As a trustee, I am able to share my experiences and contribute to the way UChicago Medicine thinks about their goals and priorities.

How does your work as a trustee contribute to ensuring the high quality of patient care offered by UChicago Medicine?

I understand the complexities of healthcare, from the diverse needs of patients, to health and safety regulations, to the work of large teams of medical professionals. I advise on UChicago Medicine’s ongoing quest to improve its performance, which includes:

  • actionable patient experience, or the insights based on feedback revealing how patients feel about their care, which then drives strategies for improvement.
  • data on safety and quality performance, or the metrics on how well the health system prevents errors or the indicators of high-quality work, which in turn help us understand UChicago Medicine’s standing relative to other institutions.
  • key drivers, or the core factors that will help us set priorities for improvement and achieve our goals.

Where do you see UChicago Medicine taking the lead in academic healthcare?

I believe UChicago Medicine’s robust research program—particularly in the areas of AI and quantum computing—will accelerate discovery and treatment for complicated health conditions. I believe UChicago Medicine will not only lead in these areas, but will excel by training the next generation of doctors to provide highly advanced patient care.

What do you want people to know about UChicago Medicine?

I want people to know how committed UChicago Medicine’s employees and caregivers are to providing high-quality, compassionate care to all the patients they serve. I think it is also important for people to understand the vital role UChicago Medicine plays on the south side of Chicago, not just as a care provider, but as an employer and community partner.

Lastly, I think people should know that UChicago Medicine doesn’t just practice medicine—it advances medicine.

What developments are you most excited to see in 2026?

I am most excited to see UChicago Medicine’s ecosystem expand through development of the new AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion, joint ventures, and acquisitions. I also think UChicago Medicine’s management is very focused on what they need to best support the mission of the health system. I am excited to see what progress the team makes against their strategic priorities.
